How to access a Mental Health Care Plan
Through the Better Access Initiative, many people can receive a Medicare rebate for their psychology sessions. It’s designed to make support more accessible, so more Australians can get the help they need when they need it.
If your GP refers you under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you may be able to claim a Medicare rebate of $98.95 per session with a Registered Psychologist or $145.25 per session with a Clinical Psychologist. Medicare allows up to 10 individual rebated sessions each calendar year.
Getting a plan is a simple process, and your GP will guide you through it. Here’s what it looks like:
01. Book a longer GP appointment
Ask for a “longer consult” or “mental health consult” so your doctor has time to chat through what’s been going on.
02. Talk with your GP about how you’ve been feeling
There’s no right or wrong way to explain things — just share what’s been happening and why you’re seeking support.
03. Your GP completes the Mental Health Treatment Plan
They’ll ask a few questions, discuss your symptoms, and if you are eligible, will create the plan with you.
04. Your GP writes a referral to Norwood Psychology
They can refer you to a specific psychologist on our team, or leave it open for us to match you with the best fit.
05. Bring the plan to your first session
Email it through, or bring a copy along — and we handle the rebate process from There. It’s all very straightforward, and if you ever feel unsure about the steps, we’re more than happy to walk you through it - just get in touch at reception@norwoodpsychology.com
Our ethos is simple: people feel better when they feel understood. We offer therapy that feels human – a real conversation, not a clinical checklist – and create a space where you feel safe to be yourself and supported to try something new.
